Fast forward 2012

So if you know me personally, you know I spent 2011 fighting breast cancer and I had to stop doing cakes during that time. Didn't have the energy, strength or fine motor skills for it. Happily, that is behind me and I have started doing cakes for friends recently. Here are several pictures from some of those, plus pictures of my son's cake last July. Hopefully this puts me back in the saddle!

At work, we do a poster, essay and speech contest for local grade school kids every year. This year the theme was "wetlands are Wonderful." I made this brownie sheet for my kids' after school program who also participated in the contest and invited me to their class to talk about wetlands.

Here are a couple random fondant pieces from a cake I di din December 2010 for a 50th birthday party. The cake was really cool, covered in his favorite activities and school logos, etc., but I learned not to triple the recipe for red velvet cake on this one. Difficult lesson and that cake still haunts me.

Finn's 8th birthday cake was a LEGO Alien Invaders themed cake. We made the people into ornaments afterward thanks to a brilliant friends suggestion!

Our friend (I think they same brilliant one who suggested shellacking the fondant LEGO men) had an awesome "clown college" birthday for her daughter. She made the cupcakes and I decorated them for her. Lots of fondant clown hats, flowers and a few classic Wilton-style clowns with the vintage clown heads from my own cakes when I was little! Mom should be proud -- I think it was the first thing I ever remember her showing me how to make!
